Mercedes-Benz E-Class E320 Avantgarde
Some people love them and some people hate them; there is little middle ground when it comes to the topic of sunroofs and moonroofs. These openings in the roofs of cars, trucks, and SUVs come in many forms and offer a variety of benefits, along with a few disadvantages as well. We'll explore different sunroof options, the benefits of sunroofs, as well as disadvantages of sunroofs, how to repair or replace your sunroof, as well as some aftermarket accessories. Let's tackle the debate of a sunroof vs.
The two terms are often used interchangeably, although the term moonroof has become the more popular version referring to any type of retractable or glass opening in a vehicle's roof. For those purists out there though, there are notable differences. Unfortunately, many explanations out there are as clear as mud, so we intend to clarify this.
The easiest way to remember the difference is that a sunroof only lets sunlight in when it's open, while a moonroof will let light in even when it's closed. A sunroof is traditionally an opaque panel paint matched to the body of the car. A moonroof is transparent- usually tinted tempered or laminated glass.
Get it? A moonroof lets in a little light light the glow of the moon all the time. And a sunroof lets in all the light, but only if it's open.

Again, the terms sunroof and moonroof are interchanged more freely today. Most cars today are equipped with moonroofs, but many still refer to them as sunroofs. From basic older styles to modern luxury options. Now that we've sorted out the sunroof vs moonroof debate, you may be wondering what your moonroof options are. There are probably more than you would expect! We will start with the basic older styles and work our way up to modern luxury options. Folding Sunroof: These manual, cloth sunroofs were a popular add-on for vintage cars before glass sunroofs became an option.
They offered a relatively inexpensive way to get the open-air feel of a convertible. But as you might imagine, wind noise and water leaks were abundant. Many were transparent and let through a small amount of light, but they did not slide and merely acted as a vent.
Some versions also acted as pop-out sunroofs which could be removed completely. T-tops and Targa Tops: Although not what traditionally comes to mind when one thinks of a sunroof, these are indeed considered to be versions of one. T-tops consist of two removable roof panels- one on the driver's side and one on the passenger's side- that leave a support beam running down the middle of the car. A targa top is similar except that it is a single large panel, eliminating the need for a center beam.Car sunroofs that are oversized, with a single or multi-panel glass as the covering rooftop, are referred to as panoramic sunroofs.
Read on to know more about this incredible car roof. We Are Flexible The panoramic sunroof can consist of panels that are either fixed, operable, or both. Be it a sport utility vehicle or an ordinary sedan, over the past few years, the number of panoramic sunroofs being installed on the car tops are really high. Would you like to write for us? Well, we're looking for good writers who want to spread the word.
Get in touch with us and we'll talk These sunroofs allow light and air to come into the cabin by lifting up the roof of the car. So these roofs are a treat to all those who do not like air to directly hit their face, when in a car. Also being featured on many top-end cars these days, panoramic sunroofs have the stupendous ability to reveal the whole cockpit to the sun, unlike the normal sunroofs or moonroofs.
What Are Panoramic Sunroofs? In simple words, panoramic sunroofs are those that extend from the front windshield to the rear windshield and are operated by roller blinds.
Cars with Such Rooftops These roofs consist of panels that are either fixed or operable. But how to install panoramic rooftops on other cars, what can be the expense, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of these sunroofs?
We are happy to clear all your confusions, so please read on. These sunroofs are available in controls like manual, electric, and electronic. You can get them installed at custom body shops, or by agencies that are known for the installation of auto glass, or at different dealerships. Remember to choose the installer who is reputable in order to avoid faults and errors during installation. Do an extensive research about the material used in the production of the sunroof, before getting them fixed.
They have also equipped these glasses with UV-reflective glass, which is an added advantage to this roof. And for those who do not like the air to hit their face directly, they can own the panoramic sunroof without a second thought. It is totally upon the owner, whether he wants a sunroof or a more magnificent rooftop, i. Nevertheless, every roof type has its set of advantages and disadvantages. In the end, all we would like to say is, drive safe and enjoy the panoramic rooftop.

Most people would tend to agree with how good they look, but having owned a panoramic sunroof equipped vehicle for the past 3 years or so, I feel there are some important issues which new car buyers need to consider before they tick that particular box on the options list. This might seem obvious, but a panoramic sunroof creates a massive window literally through which heat from the sun can enter your vehicle. The severity of this issue depends on your location in the world, how hot the summer temperatures are, and also the clarity of the sky — which will determine how strong the sunlight is.
Here in Australia, we regularly see summer daytime temperatures in excess of 40c fcombined with crystal clear blue skies allowing the strength of the sun to reach simply murderous levels. On days like that, leaving any vehicle out in the sun for 15 minutes or more will see interior temperatures sky-rocket, but a panoramic sunroof equipped car will obviously be the hottest of the lot, because the heat from the sun overhead essentially has a direct path in.
Tinted glass works on the principle of absorbing UV rays directly instead of allowing them to pass through into the interior, and essentially creates a large, black, super-heated element across the top of the vehicle.
The retractable cloth sunshades fitted directly below the panoramic sunroof do prevent some of this heat from transferring down into the cabin, but this also means that an incredible amount of heat will build up in the space between. Sometimes the difference can be as much as 50mm 2 inches.
Put simply, taller drivers would have to tilt their head on an angle towards the centre of the car in order to have their head positioned within the panoramic roof opening, and clear the headliner. The only other alternative for tall drivers is to recline their seat back further in an attempt to gain more headroom, but this can create ergonomic issues relating to steering wheel and pedal reach. Car manufacturers work hard to reduce the weight of their vehicles as it pays dividends when it comes to acceleration, braking and fuel economy.
Where possible, they also try to position heavy items such as the engine, gearbox and fuel tank as low as possible, in order to improve vehicle stability and handling. The reason they weigh so much is due to glass being a heck of a lot thicker and heavier than steel or aluminium roof panels, not to mention all the additional reinforcing bars, electric motors and drainage channels required.
Think about it like this. Having a panoramic sunroof fitted to your vehicle could be the equivalent of having an additional passenger in your car — permanently. While this may sound like a similar issue to the weight factor I mentioned above, it is an important issue to consider in its own right.
Panoramic sunroofs introduce added complexity to a vehicle. It is also worth noting that raindrops hitting a glass roof are louder, too.
While the rubber seals do keep the majority of the water out, panoramic sunroofs rely instead on water drainage channels within the roof of the vehicle to keep the moisture out.
These drainage points can sometimes clog, potentially causing the drainage channels to overflow and leak water into the cabin.
Often it is simply too hot, too cold or too windy to drive with the roof down — and as a result the driver eventually stops using it. This makes it pointless to leave the sunroof open or tilted whilst parked in an effort to vent hot air from the vehicle as the glass roof will let in far more heat than the sunroof can expel. In addition, sunroofs are often too loud to have open at speeds above 80kmh 50mphunless you enjoy yelling at your passengers in order to have a conversation.
Despite their flaws, some vehicle owners do love their panoramic sunroof equipped vehicles — you only have to check the comments below for proof of that. But perhaps they live in more forgiving climates, or the systems employed in their vehicles are better designed than the ones I have dealt with in the past. They may look fantastic and the idea of owning a vehicle with one fitted is extremely appealing, but do consider my warning that the reality of owning a car with a panoramic sunroof might not live up to your expectations.
Why not? When they go wrong, they can go very seriously wrong. I recently bought a Mercedes A Elegance from a reputable non Mercedes used car dealer and paid top dollar. On the test drive I did not notice undue noise but several days after purchasing it I detected a whistling wind noise. The roof appeared fully closed so I dismissed the roof as the cause. However, on opening and closing the roof several times it did not close fully on the rear right hand side.
I took it to a panel beater who detected the closing mechanism was broken.S-Class Coupe Press Release. Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe will have the largest smart glass roof ever to be put in a production car.
Frankfurt Auto Show — September 10, There will be six variants of the new S-Class, and the S-Class Coupe concept made its debut today at the Frankfurt Auto Show to a standing-room only exhibition hall filled with members of the international automotive and lifestyle press.
Nasdaq: REFR to turn the roof transparent by electrically aligning tiny particles within its glass. With the touch of a button, drivers and passengers can instantly change the tint of their roof to help keep out harsh sunlight and heat, and create an open-air feeling even when the sunroof is closed.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the best selling luxury car in the world. Joseph M. With features such as autonomous driving, adaptive suspension which actively counteracting road bumps, and an interior that offers the utmost in comfort and technological features, the inclusion of the MAGIC SKY CONTROL panoramic roof will make this the ultimate luxury sedan for the car owner who wants the best of everything.
Harary had noted earlier that the surface area of the panoramic roof on the S-Class using SPD-SmartGlass technology is approximately three times the size of the roof glass used on the current SLK and SL roadster, and third-party market forecasters estimate that the total vehicle production volumes for the S-Class will be higher than the SLK and SL roadsters combined.
Because of these high production volumes, greater surface area per vehicle, and the anticipated high take rates for this option by S-Class buyers, Research Frontiers believes that the addition of the S-Class next year to the two other Mercedes car models currently using SPD-SmartGlass technology should result in significantly higher royalty income to Research Frontiers from the automotive market starting next year.
This increases passenger comfort and reduces air conditioning loads, thereby saving fuel and reducing CO2 emissions. Research Frontiers is the developer of SPD-Smart light-control technology which allows users to instantly, precisely and uniformly control the shading of glass or plastic, either manually or automatically.
Research Frontiers has built an infrastructure of over 40 licensed companies that collectively are capable of serving the growing global demand for smart glass products in automobiles, homes, buildings, museums, aircraft and boats.

Nomenclature varies, but sunroof, moonroof, and "Vista" roof are all talking about the same thing. You won't see the beloved Nissan Pathfinder or a few other favorites on this list; the cheapest trim levels of many models come with limited options.
First up: our lowest MSRP -- but not the cheapest way to get a panoramic sunroof. The Hyundai Veloster is a funky three-door hatchback that will have you rowing your own gears while enjoying some impressive fuel economy. Generously equipped, the Hyundai Veloster is almost the cheapest way to get more light into your compact car, but the crown goes to the least funky member of a funky brand. The Scion tC, perhaps the least controversially styled Scion model, takes the crown as the most inexpensive way to get a panoramic sunroof on your ride.
Next up: another two-door that's one of the more fun cars to drive with a manual. Driving enjoyment is subjective, but the Mini Cooper has long been regarded as a leader in this category. If you like the cute styling, fun driving dynamics, and the extra light of a panoramic sunroof but think two doors are a little impractical, read on. We could say many of the same things about the new four-door Hardtop that we said about the two-door.
Need a bit more versatility but you're a fan of the Mini look? Our next entry has you covered. The Mini Cooper Countryman is called a "compact crossover," but the important part is that this Mini is a bit more of everything that makes the Hardtop: more passenger space, more ride height, and more "Mini. Prefer your Crossover with more utility?
Hyundai's second entry might do the trick. The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a two-row crossover that fits our medium-size SUV stereotype, with some kind of towing capacity, seating for five, room for everyone's stuff, and a commanding view of the road. What does the entry-level Audi A3 have in common with the Scion tC?
Auto Glass Made Easy
A standard panoramic sunroof. If you want German luxury and refinement, not to mention a big piece of glass overhead, the Audi A3 packs the most value; you don't even have to feel like a cheapskate. Need to transport a lot of people? Keep reading. The Hyundai Santa Fe not to be confused with the two-row Santa Fe Sport adds a third row, more towing capacity, about 4 inches to the wheelbase, and nearly 10 inches to the overall length.
The next competitor comes in for much less and has gobs more style. Speaking of character, the next offering has a reputation that precedes it.
The Chrysler has a larger than life reputation. Chances are you've seen one with questionable modifications and several thousand watts of all-bass music. Oh, that's just in L. Like American-made but need more room? Read on. Second-row passengers get two smaller panels, and even the third row gets a view of the outside world.
The "way back" seats just got a little bit better. The Audi Q3 is a compact crossover new to the U. Like the better-than-expected A3, the Q3 pleasantly surprises despite the entry-level label. Heated leather front seats, xenon headlights, LED taillights, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof are all standard options on Audi's smallest SUV.Forums New posts Search forums. I used this excellent forum before deciding on what to buy and must say that everyone here seems really helpful. There is a little 'niggle' that I have with the rear interior light cluster. I have the panorama roof so the cluster doesn't look like it does in the manual so I'd be really grateful for some advice The only thing that seems to work in the rear interior light cluster is the reading lights - there is no ambient lighting, no other rear lights and the rear roof shade switch doesn't work.
All other lighting is ok and the footwell lights come on as you open the doors etc. I've checked fuses but can't find anything wrong.
